Fanny Barton b 1841 m Rev C C Thornton.jpg

"After the funeral we left Buxton, and spent the remainder of July at Matlock; Aunt Fannie was with us, and two of her children. August at Retford, in Nottinghamshire; and September at Southwold, where Uncle Claude Thornton, and your Aunt Fanny his wife, then lived at the Vicarage. She was a very fine woman, both in looks and in character; and her five children were of the same ages as our, from Jack to Jessie. I think this was the last time we saw her - for her children alas! were left motherless less than 18 months later." *Memoirs of Emily Elliott p81

Her husband Rev. Claude Cecil Thornton (1844-1921) was the brother of Henry Edward Thornton (1842-1926), whose daughter Susan Thornton (1875-1958) married Rev. Jack Barton (1866-1941). In other words Fanny's nephew (Jack) married Fanny's husband's niece (Susan).

After Fanny's death, Claude remarried (on 19 September 1882 in High Cross, Ware, Hertfordshire) Alice Henrietta Giles Puller (1852-1930), with whom he had eight more children.
